According to Webster's Dictionary, spirit is the "animating principle of life, especially of humans; vital essence. 2. the incorporeal part of humans, or an aspect of this, as the mind or soul . . . conscious . . .supernatural"
This is a pretty good description of my summation of spirit. To me, spirit refers to all of our non-physical reality. What kinds of things are found in our non-physical reality? They are things like:
- Our Minds, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions
- Our consciousness and our subconscious
- Our Soul or higher-self
- Our human energy systems (chi, ki, prana, etc.)
- God, The Source, guides, angels, ghosts, and demons
- Multiple planes of alternative realities
- Time: past, present, and future
So spirituality is an awareness and a participation in the world of non-physical reality and all the things that are in it, like the items listed above.
Developing a spiritual life takes you deeper into the essence of reality. It is the teaming with life, the life one finds in between thoughts, in the silence. Spirituality gives you access into profound understanding, wisdom and peace. It is a path of truth.
Remember, spirituality does not mean the same thing as being religious. One can be extremely spiritual and have no affiliations with an organized religion. Spirituality is deeply personal and relevant to your everyday life.
It can help you rise above situations that vex you. It can provide the miracle of a changed perspective that completely changes your relationship with a life event or difficult person. It can sooth you when you are suffering and buoy you when you are down.
It can provide a magic carpet ride of wondrous synchronicity and magic when you begin to engage the support of the universe through conscious acts of co-creation. It can keep you "in the zone" or "in the flow" so that life feels effortless and joyful. It can be your greatest companion and savior.
